Vision/Mission

At St. John's, our mission includes:

Mission Statement

The mission statement will define the work we believe God is leading us to do.  “Love God. Love Others.”

Mission mantra

God’s love: nothing more, nothing less, nothing else.

Mission Scripture

Matthew 22:36-39  “He replied, “You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all you mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: You must love your neighbor as you love yourself.”

Core Values

These core values will guide how we seek to live out the mission statement.

  • Humility-The recognition of our relationship with God as created. It is the acceptance that we are limited by nature. It is the realization that we have a choice in submitting ourselves in love to divine grace. Humility is the willingness to efface oneself to God. Humility seeks to place God and others before ourselves.
  • Joy-Joy is God given gladness that is not at the mercy of circumstantial happiness. It is the uplift of one’s spirit, courtesy of God’s love. It is a fruit of living life led by the Holy Spirit.
  • Integrity-Integrity is the quality of being honest and having strong moral principles; moral uprightness. It is generally a personal choice to uphold oneself to consistently moral and ethical standards grounded in the love of God.
  • Learning-The activity or process of gaining knowledge or skill by studying, practicing, being taught or experiencing something: the activity of someone who learns.

Heritage

St. John's has been a part of the Georgetown Community for over 140 years.

We started as a group of Swedish immigrants who joined together in their homes to study, worship and pray and built our first church building in 1882. At that time, we were known as the Swedish Methodist Episcopal Brushy Church (Svenska Metodistkyrkan at Brushy).

The original church stood at the intersection of Westinghouse Road and FM 1460. Our church cemetery is still at this location.

In 1906 we moved to town, to our present home at 311 E University Avenue. And in 1938 we changed our name to St. John's Methodist Church.

In 1968, when the Methodist Church joined with the Evangelical United Brethren Church, St. John's became St. John's United Methodist Church.

Come join us and share in our rich history and heritage of celebrating God's love.

Our Organization

The United Methodist Church policy requires 5 governing committees to oversee the administration of our church and congregation.
These committees are:

  1. The Administrative Board - this group is comprised of the chairs of all other committees, along with several at-large members. It is the primary governing body that oversees the local congregation.
  2. Staff, Pastor, Parish Relations Committee - this is the "HR" committee that oversees the pastor and staff of our congregation.
  3. Finance Committee - this is the group that oversees the financial well-being of the church.
  4. Trustees - this group manages the physical plant, repairs & maintenance and improvements.
  5. Nominations Committee - this group seeks the guidance of the Holy Spirit in nominating those would serve the congregation in leadership and service through teams and committees.

We have a host of other teams and committees that facilitate how our church interacts with one another, other congregations and the community at large.

Weddings

Wedding at Altar Railing

A wedding in our facilities is always a Christian worship service.  The ceremony is one of the most sacred and beautiful of all the worship services of the church.   In this setting a man and a woman in the company of their loved ones and friends pledge themselves to each other as husband and wife under the blessing of God in holy marriage. The pastor of St. John’s UMC may officiate at the wedding ceremony.  Pre-marriage sessions are required by the St. John’s Pastor.  In order to make a reservation please contact the church wedding coordinator to confirm dates, policies and fees.  We look forward to hearing from you.
